Summer is right around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities. With warmer weather comes more sweating, so staying hydrated is essential. Make sure you and your family drink plenty of water throughout the day as dehydration can lead to serious health risks.
Outdoor Activities
Summer is great for hiking, camping, and swimming. If you’re spending time in wooded or grassy areas:
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing — long sleeves and long pants can help prevent insect bites.
- Apply bug spray before heading out.
- After your kids return from camp or outdoor play, check common tick‑hiding spots: hairline, behind the ears, belly button, and groin area.
- If you find a tick, remove it gently. Contact your pediatrician if it may have been attached for more than 24 hours.
Swimming Safety
Swimming is fun and great exercise, but it also increases water loss through the skin — even though you don’t notice it. Keep drinking water before and after swimming.
Important reminders:
- A responsible, sober adult should always supervise children, no matter their swimming ability.
- Pools should have clearly marked shallow and deep ends so swimmers know their limits.
- Never swim alone.
- Read posted signs and warnings before swimming in lakes, oceans, or other natural bodies of water.
- Anyone who is inexperienced or not confident in the water should wear a flotation device such as a life vest or life jacket.
Have a wonderful summer and stay healthy!
