Esse Health president and CEO Michael Castellano has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2021. He will continue on as a strategic advisor.
Castellano joined Esse Health in 2007, and during his tenure, Esse Health created a national model for value-based care through his strategic vision and leadership via a patient-centric primary care model. His visionary leadership helped create a high-performing integrated clinical and management team, develop a focus on quality assurance, and innovate health management infrastructure.
Under Castellano’s leadership, primary care offices of Esse Health have been recognized by the National Committee of Quality Assurance as Level III Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH), the highest level of achievement.
“I have been blessed with a wonderful opportunity to lead Esse Health for the last fourteen years,” Castellano says. “While not on the front line of patient care, I feel I have made a positive impact on the lives of our patients and their families. Esse Health is well-positioned for continued success.”
Esse Health Chairman of the Board Dr. David Hartenbach praised Castellano’s leadership. “Mike has been critical in Esse Health’s development as a company, bringing us closer to our vision and mission. Because of his leadership, Esse Health is in a far better place now than when he came onboard 14 years ago,” said Hartenbach.
Castellano is a director of PIVTL Health Solutions, an innovative leader in full-risk contracting, providing advisory services for population health value-based care clients, and a board member of Stratum Med, a physician-governed medical group collaborative owned by 16 Midwest-based, large multi-specialty group practices and Medical Liability Alliance (MLA) He’s also a member of the Healthcare Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, former Chair of the Gateway Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), and an Advisor to the American Medical Group Association Medicare Advantage Collaborative and MTM, Inc., a St. Louis based national company that provides non-emergent medical transportation.
